Henry LOVELL:
Notes:
Henry Lovell appears to have been a relatively restless character, moving from one area of SA to another, presumably seeking better job opportunities. It's also likely that he worked at several jobs at the same time.
From his records and obituaries (see Story 'Obituaries') we see him wearing a number of different hats:
- Gold prospector in Victoria (unsuccessful).
- Labourer in Adelaide (~1853).
- Farmer at Bagots Gap, Port Gawler, Kapunda Dalkey (near Balaclava) (1856-1870), leading eventually to insolvency.
- Councillor in Port Wakefield.
- Ore carter for the Burra mine.
- Baker and smallgoods maker in Port Wakefield (~1870?), Hoyleton (~1877), Port Wakefield (~1870?), Port Adelaide (~1891) and Hindmarsh/Thebarton (~1884). Also in Hanson St (1888), Angas St (1889)
- Grandmaster of Loyal Albert Lodge, North Adelaide (1890).
- President and other offices in the Journeyman Bakers' Society.
It appears that Henry taught his sons the business with at least John, Thomas Hills and Henry jnr. becoming bakers. By the 1950s., Lovell's Bakery - run by Thomas's sons, was one of the city's largest.
