After his father died, John Coates farmed his father's 50 acres at Murrow, Cambridgeshire.
At the age of 51, John his wife Sarah and 9 children emigrated to Australia in 1851 on the barque Amazon from London/Plymouth to Port Adelaide in South Australia, arriving 20 February 1852. Also in the party were Ann's husband James Griffin and their child James Henry, and son John's wife Rebecca (nee Prestwood).
The family settled near Bowden, with the men working as labourers.
After his wife Sarah died in 1857 many of the children either had or were in the process of moving to Victoria.
Charles Henry Coates stayed in South Australia, marrying Betsy Brown in 1864 (3 children d. 1876), then had 2 children by Elizabeth Ludgate (there's no record of the marriage, but she then married Giuseppe Samson in 1891 as Elizabeth Coutts). He died when run over by his own dray while drunk - he was a woodcarter - in 1878. At this stage at least some of his children were looked after by their grandmother, Ann Coates, then when she died, their uncle George John Griffin. One of his daughters, Sarah Jane, was murdered by her husband in 1895.
James and Ann Griffin proceeded to establish a long line of Griffins.
John Coates left Adelaide after Sarah's death and went to central Victoria. He later moved to Kyneton where he died in the Kyneton hospital on 5 June 1865, and was buried in the Kyneton cametery. His grave is unmarked.
